Okay, you got 5 seconds to name a famous artist. Go! (tick, tick, tick, tick, tick.) …Stop! Who did you name? Picasso? Monet? Van Gogh? Reubens? Matisse? Michelangelo? Rembrandt? You named a man didn’t you? Okay, let’s start again. You have 5 seconds to name a famous female artist. Go! …I’m waiting. Okay time’s up. In the art world and in popular culture, male artists are more prominent. They dominate the art scene.
Don’t despair if you couldn’t name a famous woman artist immediately. We’re here to help. The Billtown Film Festival’s theme for 2012 is Art,Women and the Environment. We’ll be celebrating artists – especially women artists and particularly women filmmakers. We’ll also tip our hat to women environmentalists. The lines between the two disciplines are not that distinct. In many cases, we have found women who are both visually creative and concerned about the environment. (Lily Yeh is an excellent example.)
